Voice Output Devices (VOD) are also referred to as Voice Output Communiction Aids (VOCA), Communication Devices, Speech Generating Devices, (SGD).There are different devices available that will accommodate varying needs. Most high tech devices will include direct selection and a scanning feature for switch access. The excessive prices on AAC devices make it unobtainable for many. Look at better assessment strategies and alternatives with software and hardware that are not manufactured specifically for speech and language difficulties. With a little skill and ingenuity, there are many alternatives already available. For example, using Microsoft PowerPoint, Opus Presenter, or FrontPage/Dreamweaver and Flash you can use hyperlinks to jump from page to page. You can even use the newer versions of Microsoft Word.
